All You Need To Know About Equine Flu And How To Continue Competing

Hannah Paul

Born in 1988 Hannah Paul is a showjumper who showed lots of riding ability from a young age, starting in pony club she soon started developing a love for show jumping, representing Great Britain as a junior rider. As a senior rider Hannah Paul continued her success jumping many classes at shows all around Europe.
tHannah Paul - Showjumper

Hannah was educated at Beechwood Park Preparatory School for Boys and Girls and St Albans College, where she passed her GCSE’s in English Language, Literature, French and Mathematics. Hannah had shown tremendous ability and enthusiasm for many sports but her first love has always been show jumping. Having joined the Pony Club at a very early age, she took part in most activities. She developed a talent for show jumping and after taking part in unaffiliated shows, became a member of the BSJA.

At eight years old, she represented England in her first team event and enjoyed tremendous success on her 128 cm ponies. At nine, Hannah moved up to ride 138 cm ponies and started to win at Grand Prix level. At just 11, her trainer felt she was ready to move on to 148 cm ponies. Although she was competing against children 5 years older, Hannah soon started to get her share of the ribbons and having made a real impression on the Chef D’Equipe of the British Pony Team, she was selected to take part on a Nations Cup Team, in Lumen Belgium, at twelve years old. Hannah was one of the youngest children, ever selected for a Nations Cup Competition. Despite her inexperience at international level, she produced the only double clear, to win the competition, for Great Britain.

In October 2001, Hannah started her partnership with Mister Amontilano, which resulted in one of Britain’s best ever combinations, both nationally and internationally. Hannah has experienced the highs and the lows of competitive sport. In April 2003, she suffered a fall, breaking both bones in her leg and dislocating her ankle. Despite the pins and plates, Hannah refused to accept that her dream of representing Great Britain, at the European Championships was over. After four weeks, the plaster was removed by a specialist sports orthopaedic surgeon and Hannah embarked on a programme of physiotherapy and exercise, for six hours every day, which was extremely painful. Her courage and determination paid off, when just twelve weeks after the accident, she jumped a triple clear in the European Championships, in Necarne, Northern Ireland, to win a Silver Individual medal and rode the Anchor Leg, for the Team to win Gold for Great Britain.

In Poland in 2004, she went one better, fulfilling her dream, to become European Individual Champion. Although 2004 was Hannah’s last year in ponies, she started her career in horses with tremendous success, winning the Under 16 National Championship, Under 18 Championship at the Scope Festival and being placed in the Open Ladies Competition and she was Leading Junior Rider in Liege, Belgium. Hannah is 100% committed to her sport – she works on the yard every day when she is not competing and understands the importance of physical and mental preparation. Self discipline, is a key factor, particularly at big competitions. Hannah is often seen going to bed, when her fellow competitors are on their way out! Hannah’s ambition, is to represent Great Britain in Senior Nations Cup Teams and the Olympics. Individually she would love to win the Queens Cup, at the Royal International. In 2004 Hannah produced an outstanding novice pony, to win Pony of the Year and second, at Horse of the Year Show. She won the European Individual Gold medal on her pony Mr Amontilano, won the National Under 16 Championship on her horse Lucky and won the Scope Under 18 Championship on her horse Saffier.

Hannah made great progress during 2006 winning numourous classes at big shows at senior level, including 3rd in the British Open Qualifier at Addington in March, and winning the East of England 7yrs Championship. The summer turned out to be special, with Hannah being a member of the bronze medal under 18 European Championship team in Athens. Later on in the year Hannah was again successful abroad winning at Valkenswaard on her very promising horse Sirius, and an excellent 2nd place in the 1.40m International Open at the UNEX Masters CSI** show.

Hannah’s role models within the sport include Di Lampard, Liz Edgar, Nick Skelton, John and Michael Whitaker and a special mention goes to Peter Charles who has been Hannah`s trainer and mentor for the last three years, and Pippa Funell from the eventing world.

Hannah now fully concentrates on producing her impressive string of young horses which includes the HOYS 2009 Grade C qualifier Vilou, her exciting 7yr old Valumia Balia (2nd at Royal Windsor 2009), Belle Dam - already winner of an international young horse class and For Voltaire a very progressive 6yr old.

Q: I have three ponies who have all had laminitis with their previous owners. They are learn and fit, doing cross-country, showjumping and flatwork lessons three or four days a week. They are stabled at night and wear grazing muzzles when they are turned out. How can I keep condition on while making sure I am not contributing to the possibility of a laminitic attack?

To answer your questions briefly, laminitis can occur in horses and ponies which are in work, but it is considerably less likely than if they are not.

The important thing to remember is that they must have restricted access to grazing and grain feeds, but must still have enough energy to be able to perform.

This means feeding a combination of roughage and moderately digestible starch, in addition to a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and watching their weight carefully.

To maintain their condition, consider adding some convalescent diet or pony cubes, as these tend to be of low to medium energy content.

You can also add some oil to the ration to increase the energy density, and make sure you are feeding optimum quality hay as this will continue to provide energy in a slowly released form.

It is also important to treat each horse as an individual as one might need more food than the others to maintain condition, even if they are doing the same exercise.
